Brimbank’s Men’s Sheds will throw their doors open to the public this week as the establishments take part in a week of celebration.
The second annual Men’s Shed week began yesterday and runs through until Sunday, October 1.
Braybrook Men’s Shed chairman Col Paterson said preparations for festivities began weeks ago, with an invitation extended to the public to come in and see what takes place behind the shed’s doors.
“We’ve distributed flyers around the community, inviting them to an open day on Wednesday, September 27.
“We’ve also invited Bill Shorten and Member for Footscray Marsha Thomson to attend on the day so everyone can see what we do here,” he said.
While many people are aware of the Men’s Shed program, Mr Paterson said the important role the sheds play in the community often goes unnoticed.
“We’re not just a bunch of guys sitting around drinking beers all day, we actually work on projects and give back to the community,” he said.
“Our latest project is a beautiful wooden desk to go in the office of Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming,” he said.
Australian Men’s Shed Association executive officer David Helmers lauded the impact Men’s Sheds have on communities across the country.
“The benefits of Men’s Sheds extend well beyond the shed.
“Activities at the shed support local people, groups and organisations and bring people together in ways that strengthen communities.
“Men’s Sheds are building communities and fixing lives.”
