Parks, recreation given a fresh outlook

Millions of dollars are set to be spent upgrading and improving Brimbank’s sporting facilities over the next 10 years.

Brimbank council’s draft Sports Facilities Action Plan outlines which projects will receive priority for funding over the next 10 years, as well as projects the council will be investigating for investment.

This includes a possible regional multi-sport facility at Energy Park in Sunshine, although this is likely to be at least 10 years away.

According to the report, pavilions at Errington Reserve (St Albans), More Park Nature Reserve (Ardeer), Delahey Recreation Reserve, Bon Thomas Reserve (Deer Park) and Lloyd Reserve (Sunshine) will be the priority for funding over the next five years.

The report, which is out for public consultation, also outlined upgrades to surfaces, lighting and training facilities for a number of centres across Brimbank

Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said it was important to continue to invest in sporting facilities to meet the needs of the community, particularly for the growing number of women who are taking up sport.

“Since 2012, we’ve invested more than $51 million on maintaining, renewing and upgrading sports pavilions and outdoor playing surfaces, but there’s still much work to be done,” Cr Giudice said.

“New and updated sport and recreation facilities are an important part of getting more people, more active, more often.

“We have a responsibility to encourage the community to participate in sport by providing sports facilities that give people of all ages and abilities every opportunity to be active.

“There has been a significant increase in the number of women and girls playing sport in Brimbank [and] this has added further pressure on demand for sporting opportunities locally, and this is reflected in the draft plan.”

Council has also announced a $1.5 million upgrade to parking at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve, adding 320 spaces.

The carpark is used by the Keilor Little Athletics, Keilor Park Synthetic Sportsfields, Keilor Park Softball Association and the Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium.
