Overall crime down but still high in Brimbank

Overall crime figures have decreased in Brimbank over the past year, however it remains a state leader for criminal activity, recording the fifth highest number of offences for all local government areas across the state.

There were 17,912 offences recorded by the Crime Statistics Agency for the 2014-15 year, a drop from 18,223, with drops in incidents of burglary, deception, property damage, robbery and sexual offences.

Weapons and explosives offences continue to climb, jumping from 547 to 742 this year, and doubling over the past four years.

Incidents of drug offences increased from 1213 to 1435, while there were also jumps in stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour, assault and theft.

Family violence incidents increased by 15 per cent over the same period, from 1692 to 2481.

Sunshine recorded the most offences in Brimbank with 6360, followed by the 3021 postcode area which includes St Albans, Kealba, Kings Park (4561) and the 3023 postcode area including Cairnlea, and Deer Park (4091).
