Sunshine Hospital occupational therapist Leanne Reynolds is counting down the days until the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is completed late next year.

Ms Reynolds works in the children’s allied health service department, which has a waiting list of almost a year for its services.

“We’re in one of the fastest growing corridors in the country … the number of babies rises every year,” she said.

So for the past four years she’s rounded up family members – including her parents, siblings and their children – to walk Western Health Foundation’s WalkWest event at Footscray Park to help raise funds for the new hospital, which is being built at Sunshine.

The annual fundraising event comprises a two-kilometre, five-kilometre and a 10-kilometre walk or run along the Maribyrnong River.

Work began on the new hospital in October last year. When completed, the hospital will provide 20 new maternity delivery rooms, 39 special care nursery cots, four operating theatres and space for additional clinics.

WalkWest will be held on Sunday, March 26, at Footscray Park. Entry costs $20 for adults. Children aged 16 and under can walk/run for free.
