It’s been a year since level crossing removals at St Albans and Ginifer stations were completed, and the community is reaping the benefits.

According to St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman’s office, traffic data in the morning peak shows average travel time savings of 30 per cent at Main Road and 19 per cent at Furlong Road since the level crossings were removed.

Traffic flow has also improved substantially, with volumes near the level crossing sites increasing by 75 per cent at Main Road and
38 per cent at Furlong Road.

Ms Suleyman was on hand last week, complete with a cake, to mark the one year anniversary.

“A year ago today, the congested and deadly level crossings at Main Road and Furlong Road were removed forever. Thank you, St Albans,” Ms Suleyman said.

The work included lowering the rail line at Main and Furlong roads and building updated stations at St Albans and Ginifer.

The neighbouring stations are now connected by two kilometres of new walking and cycling paths, and Parkiteer cages have been installed at both stations.

Finishing touches to the precincts – such as landscaping, carparking and cycling upgrades – were completed in mid-2017, including the creation of trader spaces that have allowed several new shops to call St Albans station home.
