Old council eye-sore

A fence has been put up around the old council building in Sunshine with residents online are still calling the site an eye-sore.

Residents have complained about the state of the old building, along with some calls to knock down the building due to its state.

The once loved mural on the front of the building has been left without care for a number of years now, losing its colour. There are also a number of holes in the old mural.

The building was sold for over $5.5 million in 2019, but seems to remain unused five years on.

Brimbank council director of city futures Kelvin Walsh said the offices haven’t been left in a great state since the sale by the council.

“The former Brimbank council offices at 6-18 Alexandra Avenue, Sunshine, were sold in 2019,” he said. “The site has a Heritage Overlay (HO109) under the Brimbank Planning Scheme for its historical, social and architectural significance at the local level,” he said.

“A planning permit has been issued to convert the existing building into 35 apartments, however this permit has not been acted upon.

“The condition of the site since its sale has been a concern to council and as a result council’s building compliance department has issued orders for the site to be made safe and for secure fencing to be erected around the building.

“The fencing has recently been completed, however further works are required to the building itself. Officers will continue to work with the owner to ensure compliance with the orders.

“For privacy reasons we are unable to disclose the current owner of the site.”
