One-hundred-and-thirty-four offences were recorded in Brimbank over the Melbourne Cup long weekend as part of a statewide road policing operation.
‘Operation Furlong’, which ran from Friday 31 October until Tuesday 4 November, targeted high-risk driving behaviour with a particular focus on speeding and impaired drivers.
In Brimbank, the most common offence was drivers disobeying road signs and signals with police recording 41 instances of the rule breach.
Speeding offences and mobile phone offences came in second and third on the list with 40 and 16 incidents recorded respectively.
Police caught nine unlicensed drivers, two disqualified drivers and intercepted eight unregistered vehicles.
Six drug drivers and three drink drivers were pinged along with one combined drink/drug driver.
Four people were found not wearing a seatbelt and two vehicles were impounded too.
Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said police continue to detect too many drivers taking unnecessary risks across the state.
“The number of people detected for impaired driving over the last five days is particularly concerning – these are people who have made a choice to drive knowing they have alcohol or drugs in their system,” Assistant Commissioner Weir said.
Victoria Police said it will continue to conduct local road policing enforcement in high-risk areas, particularly on major roads to regional areas and around holiday hotspots.
