Melbourne Airport has reminded Brimbank council to obey strict airspace guidelines in its plans to develop the Brooklyn industrial precinct.
The council wants to improve the precinct’s economic performance, image and infrastructure, and clean up its environmental footprint.
Brimbank administrators chairman John Watson said the site would develop over the next 20 years as part of the Brooklyn Evolution Strategy.
Mr Watson said council plans foreshadowed an important employment hub and a destination for clean, green investment and development.
The council is proposing a planning scheme amendment to rezone land along Geelong Road from industrial to commercial. It wants a new zoning that would promote office developments, showrooms and large retail outlets.
The council received 11 objections concerned with land and financial impacts.
In its submission to the council, airport management said: “The operation of [the airport] should not be adversely affected with the proposed requirements that relate to potential intrusion into ‘prescribed airspace’. Activities that result in the emission of steam, smoke, gas or dust should not impact into prescribed airspace above 240 metres.”
The council has asked the Planning Minister for a panel to review unresolved objections to the plan.
