Brimbank patients have poor access to cardiac care, and the area is recording the highest rates of cardiovascular disease in metropolitan Melbourne, Brimbank council has been told.
The council is assessing a planning permit for a six-days-a-week medical centre for two doctors and “a team of quality cardiology specialists”.
Its development would involve the partial demolition of a building across the road from Sunshine Hospital.
The centre, at 161 Furlong Road, would be opened and operated by interventional cardiologist Associate Professor Nicholas Cox, who is cardiology director of Western Health at Sunshine Hospital.
Dr Cox has “championed the development of critical care services at Sunshine Hospital”, the permit application states.
“The development of private cardiology consulting suites on the subject site is part of his vision of providing a full range of high-quality care to patients in the western suburbs of Melbourne,” it states.
“The patients in this region have among the highest incidence of cardiovascular disease in all metropolitan Melbourne yet currently have comparatively poor access to cardiac care.”
It is proposed that the new centre be open from 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to noon on Saturdays.
