New SBS drama to be filmed in Sunshine

Filming will begin this month.

A new mini-series from the director behind Offspring will be filmed in Sunshine and named after the suburb.

Filming of the joint SBS and Carver Films’ four-part drama series Sunshine will begin in late March and is due to wrap-up mid-May.

A number of Sunshine households have been contacted by the series’ location manager to use their houses for the production.

The series will be directed by Daina Reid, who has TV hits Offspring, Paper Giants, Howzat! and INXS biopic Never Tear Us Apart to her name, and was written by playwright Matt Cameron and actor, screenwriter and director Elise McCredie.

Screen Australia’s upcoming production report citesSunshine as a “working class suburb” where protagonist Jacob Chagai lives. Born in South Sudan, Jacob is an aspiring professional basketballer, a storyline that has parallels to the rise of South Sudanese-Australian professional basketballer Thon Maker, who escaped civil war and settled in Perth – the 20-year-old now plays for Milwaukee Bucks.

Sunshine is a vibrant, kinetic and compelling hybrid drama that explores a world of contrasts – truth and reconstruction, past and present, hope and heartbreak – felt by those forging a new life in a foreign land,” its synopsis says.

Sunshine goes to air later this year.
