A new parking permit policy and two carpark management plans aimed at meeting the needs of residents, traders and commuters in the Sunshine and St Albans activity centres have been adopted by Brimbank council.
The council said the permit policy will guide permit parking practices, and provide the policy basis for the provision of carparking in key activity centres and high demand residential areas.
Mayor Georgina Papafotiou said that council’s main focus was to help manage parking challenges and deliver safer, less congested council carparking spaces across the municipality.
“Council recognises that parking should be readily available and well located for those who need and value it the most,”Cr Papafotiou said.
“The plans will help guide the management of existing carparking spaces in Sunshine and St Albans town centres, and help make it easier for people to shop, visit and do business in these busy centres.
“Council aims to provide a fair and efficient parking system for our residents, local businesses, visitors and public transport commuters to help make parking in Brimbank easier.”
Based on a previous parking strategy adopted in August 2019, the council said the current plans have been prepared to maximise the use of the existing parking assets, and not create additional carparking.
The plans are based on an independent carparking study into parking patterns around the Sunshine and St Albans town centres.
The council said the plans support a range of areas including parking demand and location, time limits and signage, traffic flows, off-street parking options, permit parking and zoned areas.
