A new federal electorate has been created in the heart of Brimbank.
The electorate of Fraser, named in honour of former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, has been created to reflect the growing population in Melbourne’s north-west.
The electorate will be made up of areas formerly occupied by the electoral zones of Gorton, Calwell, Maribyrnong and Gellibrand.
Brimbank suburbs Taylors Lakes, Keilor, Sydenham, Sunshine, Albion, Cairnlea and St Albans, Delahey, Kealba, Ardeer and Deer Park will be included in the electorate.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has been widely touted as likely to be the new electorate’s MP if he makes the switch from his current seat of Maribyrnong.
The changes mean there will be 151 federal MPs following the next election, compared to 150 at present.
Once Fraser is added, Victoria will have 38 electorates.
In further changes to the state’s federal electorates, the seat of Batman, in Melbourne’s inner north, has been renamed Cooper, to honour indigenous rights activist William Cooper, while Melbourne Ports will be renamed Macnamara.
