The new opportunities offered at a revamped community centre in Albion are “endless”, says a member of its new management team.
Albion Eco Living Centre at Selwyn Park is currently a “hall for hire” and will soon be managed by an incorporated local committee of management.
The committee will lease the council- owned building, with costs of upkeep to be covered by the council.
Under the agreement, room rental of about $9000 a year will be used as centre income.
Management spokesman Robert Jackson said the centre could also partner with not-for-profit organisations.
“Some programs will be partly funded and others self-sufficient,” he said.
“Some programs will attract their own funding. We’re looking into all of these things at the moment.”
The new committee must provide a business plan by June next year for the centre. Currently, it hosts indigenous programs and yoga classes.
“It has about half a dozen regular users at the moment,” Mr Jackson said. “We’re looking to keep them and add more.
“The possibilities are endless – it’s just a hall for hire at the moment. There could be language classes and sustainable gardening. There was a community garden there for several years, but there was a slight asbestos issue so it’s been revamped.”
