NBN rollout picks up momentum

About 12,000 Brimbank premises will be among those to enjoy the latest NBN technology.

Parts of Deer Park, Sunshine, Keilor and Sydenham will be receiving FTTC (fibre to the curb) connections in the near future.

FTTC delivers fibre-optic cable all the way to a pit outside a home or business.

Existing copper lines are then used to connect from the kerb to the premises – avoiding the need to dig a trench through driveways, dig up gardens or drill through walls. The technology provides quicker speeds than the FTTN (fibre to the node) connections previously introduced.

An NBN Co representative said the company was excited to be expanding the technology.

“NBN is delighted to announce the expansion to our FTTC footprint,” the spokesperson said.

“End-users should check the NBN website to see whether their suburb will be served with FTTC technology and when their premises will be ready to connect.”

Minister for Communications, Senator Mitch Fifield said the new technology was as quick as its predecessor and more cost effective.

“FTTC is the latest technology to be used in the NBN rollout, and over the next few years one million premises around the country will be connected to high-speed broadband using FTTC.

“FTTC can deliver the same 100Mbps speeds as fibre to the premise (FTTP) technology but at lower cost, in much less time and with far less disruption to people’s property,” he said.

While NBN has committed to serve an initial 1.5 million premises with FTTC across the country, not all homes will receive the new technology.

FTTC will only be built in areas that are not connected to current NBN services.
