MY PLACE: Holly Glavich

Williamstown teenager Holly Glavich is working hard to help others. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?

I have lived in Williamstown my whole life. I went to the local kinder, Williamstown Primary and have just started year 11 at Williamstown High. I met my best friends as a baby and we all still live here. Last year, I volunteered at Williamstown Hospital for six weeks through a school program.

What do you like about Williamstown?

I love living by the beach in Williamstown. I spend my whole summer at the beach so it’s extremely convenient to have it a stone’s throw away. I love the old architecture of Williamstown. My house is over 100 years old.

What would you change?

I would change the newer architecture. I really don’t like it, the old buildings and houses in Williamstown are beautiful.

What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery?

Definitely Hellenic Republic. I love Greek food and culture.

Can you tell me about your World Challenge trip?

Towards the end of 2018, World Challenge will be taking approximately 50 students
from Williamstown High School to Swaziland and Mozambique in southern Africa for four weeks. I will be volunteering in a medical centre aimed to help people suffering with AIDS. We fly into Johannesburg, South Africa, and head straight to Swaziland. After three weeks of work, we trek over the mountains into Mozambique, rest a little and then head back to Australia.

I must raise $8650 for this adventure so every donation counts. I have organised Bunnings barbecues, a massive garage sale and mini fete, movie nights and other fundraisers.

What are you passionate about and why?

I am passionate about helping people less advantaged than myself. I aspire to work as a nurse in developing countries or in the army. World Challenge has provided me with the perfect opportunity to begin my work and make a difference in the world.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?

At the moment I am working five jobs to save for World Challenge.
