My Place

Kings Park resident Fiona Demark is an adventure seeking local who does not let being blind stop her from achieving her dreams. Ms Demark tells Hannah Hammoud about her connection to Brimbank and the importance of keeping a positive mindset.

Tell us a bit about you and what you do.

I am an inspirational speaker and coach and am passionate about helping others. I bring a unique aspect to my work as I have learned how to ‘think outside the square’ and overcome challenges as I am legally blind. I have realised that my disability is a positive and it makes me who I am and gives me a unique perspective on challenges and how we can all take the opportunities provided to make the best of life.

What is your connection to the Brimbank area?

I have lived in the area for many years. I love the diversity of culture and environment. I am a member of the local council Disability Advocacy Committee and feel that Brimbank is an area of growth.

What do you love most about where you live?

The cultures, the cuisines and great transport infrastructure that assists with accessibility.

What, if anything, would you change about where you live?

More community connections.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

I love adventure and will get involved in anything that involves adrenaline and challenges my fear and takes me out of my comfort zones. I also enjoy reading audio books, chatting with friends and listening to a wide range of music.

How do you balance motherhood with your business aspirations?

Although my daughters are now young adults, motherhood never stops. I still constantly worry about their outcomes and wellbeing, the issues just change as they get older. There is plenty of time for rest, relaxation and spending time with loved ones, but being busy and living life to the full keeps me happy. I balance it out so I never feel overwhelmed.

What aspects do you find challenging?

Networking, creating social media, travel and using technology are all things I have to think about and do differently – imagine making an Instagram post when you can not see the photo – or the screen for that matter. My advice to people is to just give it a go. If you don’t you will never know. Regrets are something you do not want to spend energy on.
