Brimbank is one of the most culturally diverse areas of Melbourne, which will make for a colourful picnic at Brimbank Park next week when the children of the city get together.
The free picnic on Wednesday, March 22, has been organised by the council and the Victorian Co-operative on Children’s Services for Ethnic Groups (VICSEG).
It is especially for children aged up to five, and their families, and is part of the city’s Cultural Diversity Week celebrations.
Nguri Ngur runs a group for Burmese women and their children, and said the picnic is a great chance to celebrate all the cultures that call Brimbank home.
“It’s a heart-warming feeling to be accepted into a new country, so to have this kind of picnic and to see other cultures and other people with lots of colour, is great,” Ms Ngur said.
“We would like to bring all the children together from all the cultural backgrounds … parents, grandparents and families.
“We want them all to come together in Brimbank Park to enjoy the day and to have harmony.”
VICSEG is hoping more than 500 families will get together for the picnic, which will feature indigenous arts, crafts and cultural games, henna art, storytime, singing, dancing and football activities.
Cultural Diversity Week activities aim to build connections between Brimbank’s many diverse cultural communities, to educate on indigenous culture, and increase the sense of belonging among community groups.
