A man was arrested and his motorcycle impounded after being observed travelling at high speeds in Albion earlier this week.

Police initially observed a grey Kawasaki without a number plate carrying a pillion passenger on Ballarat Road on Wednesday about 10pm.

The motorbike allegedly rode through red lights and evaded police at high speeds in excess of 120km/h in a 70km zone before riding into a car park in Forrest Street. The motorbike clipped a police vehicle as it attempted to flee the area.

The male rider then allegedly ran from the scene leaving his female pillion passenger behind.

A 49-year-old Melton West man was arrested nearby.

During a search of the man, police located a large amount of cash, a flick key knife, suspected methylamphetamine and cannabis.

The man is expected to be charged with various offences including reckless conduct endangering life, failing to stop vehicle on police request, refusing preliminary breath test, unlicensed driving, possessing a controlled weapon without excuse and possessing drugs of dependence.

The motorcycle was impounded for 30 days.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear at court at a later date in relation to a number of outstanding warrants.
