Moths after dark event

Locals looking to learn more about the fascinating world of moths and other nocturnal insects can register for a free guided citizen science event in Brimbank, hosted by the Friends of Kororoit Creek (FOKC).

‘Moths after Dark at the Bug Rug’ will be led by expert entomologist Luis Mata and will focus on documenting insect species active at night using a technique known as lightsheeting.

According to FOKC, the technique involves using a a LepiLED entomological (insect) light set up against a white canvas sheet to attract insects in a gentle, non-invasive way.

The event will run from 8.30pm on Sunday 18 January at the Bug Rug, 59 Sanders Avenue, Sunshine West.

There will be some light after dinner snacks for participants at 8.30pm.

Participants should wear enclosed shoes and long pants, bring a torch and dress for the weather.

FOKC said its team will be keeping a close eye on safety throughout the event and help guide attendees out of the site at the end of the night.

The event is supported by Brimbank council and the state government through the Green Links Grant programs.
