Most dumped animals at shelter from Brimbank

The biggest share of abandoned animals in the west that end up at the Lost Dogs Home in North Melbourne come from Brimbank.

Star Weekly revealed earlier this month the council had discussed with Corrections Victoria the possibility of a “shared animal management facility” at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, with Minister for Corrections Wade Noonan expressing interest in the idea.

With doubts over the long-term viability of the Lost Dogs Home (LDH) in North Melbourne, Brimbank will join with Hobsons Bay and Wyndham councils to investigate a service for impoundment, after-hours collection and rehousing of domestic cats and dogs.

An LDH spokesman said “Brimbank council and Wyndham City Council bring in the highest numbers of animals out of all our council partners in the western region”.

The total number of days dogs and cats from Brimbank were in the LDH climbed from 22,406 in 2013-14 to 23,555 in 2014-15.

A northern suburbs animal rescue shelter also revealed it received more than 60 abandoned dogs and cats from Brimbank over the past year.

“We help a number of council areas but have quite a few animals being surrendered from the Brimbank area,” Second Chance Animal Rescue managing director Marisa Debattista said.
