More hands needed for food relief

Duke Street Community House is calling for more volunteers to support its pop-up food relief markets.

The pop-up food relief markets are kicking off on Wednesday, February 8, with further markets scheduled at Duke Street Community House on Wednesday, March 8, Wednesday, April 5, Wednesday, May 10 and Wednesday, May 31.

Food markets will also be hosted at the Yarraville Community Centre and Braybrook and Maidstone Neighbourhood House throughout the first half of the year.

Duke Street community development officer Rajdeep Kang said the project was delivered thanks to state government funding to respond to food insecurity in the Maribyrnong and Brimbank local government areas.

“These markets are going to feature culturally appropriate food, fresh produce, support service information, healthy cooking demonstrations and children’s activities in a farmer’s market style atmosphere,” she said.

“This project is an initiative to get food to those people who need it the most.

“It is an opportunity for the community to come connect through food and fun activities.”

Duke Street Community House is also running its weekly food relief program from the Central West Shopping Centre each Wednesday from 1pm to 2.30pm.

Residents from the 3012, 3019 and 3020 postcodes are eligible to access hampers for free or for a $5 donation to support the program.
