Monmia Primary School has beaten out thousands of applicants to be named as a finalist at the Victorian Education Excellence Awards.

The Keilor Downs school was nominated for the Outstanding School Advancement Award.

Assistant principal Vineta Mitrevski said the nomination was recognition for a lot of hard work.

“We’re a small school and we’re up against schools three times the size of us,” she said.

“We know we’re on the right track … just because we’re smaller doesn’t mean we have any less passion.

“We’ve got the right people, with the right purpose in the right place … to be named as one of three finalists out of over 7000 applicants is vindication.”

The list of more than 7000 applicants was narrowed down to 30 candidates, with Monmia named as one of three finalists.

Ms Mitrevski believes the school was nominated for its dedication to transforming its culture into one of continuous improvement. She credited its success to a vision embraced by the whole school community.

“There is a strong focus on learning for all and equal value given to achievement, engagement and wellbeing,” Ms Mitrevski said.

“Staff work in collaborative cultures in high-performing teams ensuring all students achieve their individual goals.

“Our Naplan results have soared and we think this success should be celebrated.”
