Model planes with three-metre wingspans, mini-gliders and helicopters will take to the skies later this month to perform a series of aerial acrobatics to rival the Avalon Air Show.

On April 23, the Keilor and Districts Model Aircraft Society will throw open its doors to the public for its annual open day.

Society president Shane Talbot says the not-so-pint-sized model aircraft are capable of performing more complex aerial tricks than their manned counterparts because there are no worries about passenger safety.

“So they’re able to pull all sorts of stunts,” he says.

About 40 members will fly their aircraft in front of about 100 spectators. The open day venue is opposite Keilor Public Golf Course, Sunday April 23, 10am until 3pm. Entry: $2.
