Milestone for school

Deer Park West Primary School is celebrating a major milestone and is hoping the former school community can get involved.

The school will celebrate its 50th birthday and is hoping to have a picnic on September 14, subject to COVID-19 restrictions, to celebrate the milestone.

Current grade five teacher Justin Camilleri said they were starting to put out feelers to former pupils and teachers.

“We are hoping to have a picnic sort of thing,” he said. “We normally have a picnic each year, but we’re hoping this year will be even bigger to celebrate.

“We are encouraging past pupils and teachers to come and be part of the day. There’s still teachers at the school that have been there a long time that people will recognise.”

Mr Camilleri said they were also hoping to set up some interviews between current pupils and those who were there before them so pupils cam learn about the history of the school.

Much has changed since the school was built and opened on September 29, 1971, he said. The school was renovated in 2000.

In 1971 there were 11 teaching staff, now there are 50 staff and 481 pupils fro, 24 different countries.

Former pupils and teachers can contact the school for more details.
