There will be plenty of colour and entertainment as the Midsumma Festival hits Melbourne’s west.

Midsumma is Victoria’s premier queer arts and cultural organisation, bringing together a diverse mix of LGBTQIA+ artists, performers, communities and audiences.

Following the success of recent years, local councils have got behind the festival which kicks off on January 21.

Among the events, Maribyrnong council is holding an evening of multi-disciplinary performance-art by creatives with roots in the western suburbs, along with author talk and Hobsons Bay council is encouraging residents of the west to be part of a rainbow installation and have installed an outdoor exhibition space in Laverton.

Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre is hosting a multi-media exhibition, while there will be a queer history walk in Footscray.

Lucy Best will perform at the Bowery Theatre in St Albans, while Brimbank council and Bulldog Pride will host a pool party in Sunshine.

In Wyndham, the Park Lounge returns to Kelly Park, while The Substation in Newport will host the Queen on Country by Peter Waples-Crowe and there is a Pier Festival in Williamstown.
