Midnight Oil hits the Rock

It has been nearly two decades since Australian music fans could rock along to see Midnight Oil perform live at a concert – but all that’s about to change later this year.

The legendary Australian rock band will perform at Hanging Rock on November 4 as part of its Great Circle 2017 world tour.

It will be the band’s first world tour in more than 15 years, and Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson says she couldn’t be happier that the iconic group has added a show at the Rock to their tour schedule.

“Midnight Oil is the quintessential Aussie rock band,” Cr Anderson said.

“They’re political and passionate, and to see them reunited and in the Macedon Ranges is something really special.”

A staple of the Sydney music scene in the 1970s, Midnight Oil rose to fame a decade later having etched some of the country’s fiercest political anthems, including

Beds are Burning, Power and the Passion and Blue Sky Mine.

The Midnight Oil gig is the latest in a string of high profile musical appearances at Hanging Rock, including the recent Bruce Springsteen concert, The Eagles, the late Leonard Cohen, Rod Stewart and Cold Chisel.

“The flow-on benefit for the community and businesses after the two Bruce Springsteen concerts in 2013 was estimated to be in the vicinity of $9.7 million,” Cr Anderson said.
