Metro tunnel trains to be controlled out of Sunshine

A new control hub for trains traveling through the Metro Tunnel and on the Sunbury line will be handled out of Sunshine in a new signal control centre.

The centre will bring turn-up-and-go train services for Melbourne another step closer while the centre will support the delivery of more frequent train services.

The centre will have the capacity to manage future rail projects in the west including Melbourne Airport Rail, which will allow for a train every 3 minutes during the peak.

Transport Infrastructure MP Jacinta Allan said more modern trains will come from the new centre.

“Switching on the new Sunshine Signal Control Centre is a huge milestone for the project as we launch what will be the command centre overseeing train services through the Metro Tunnel and on the upgraded Sunbury Line.”

“High-tech upgrades to the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines will enable bigger, more modern trains to run more often, giving passengers a better journey when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.”

Footscray MP Katie Hall said the centre will help assist the connection of passengers.

“Sunshine is shaping up as the transport superhub of Melbourne’s west, with a new signalling control centre for the Metro Tunnel and a redeveloped Sunshine Station connecting passengers directly to Melbourne Airport via a future rail link.”
