Rezoning two former school sites in Keilor to allow for residential development would expose new residents to aircraft noise, a Melbourne Airport-convened committee says.
At the Community Aviation Consultation Group’s most recent meeting, chair Darrell Treloar said applying residential zoning to the sites of the former Calder Rise and Keilor Park primary schools to maximise return was contrary to the state government’s commitment to safeguarding airport operations.
“Should the rezoning be permitted, it could expose new residents to aircraft noise,” he said.
The group, which includes airport, government and community representatives, was set up to canvas issues affecting the airport.
In May, the state government announced its intention to sell the former school sites in Green Gully Road, Keilor, and Eliza Street, Keilor Park.
At the time Brimbank council made a submission to the Government Land Standing Advisory Committee to rezone the land from public use zone to general residential, which allows for unit and townhouse development.
Public briefings on the proposal were held throughout May and submissions accepted.
The advisory committee gave its report to Planning Minister Richard Wynne on July 29.
Carly Dixon, Melbourne Airport’s executive corporate and public affairs, said airport management had made a private submission to the committee.
A spokesman for Mr Wynne said the minister was currently considering the recommendations.
