Market history revived in Sunshine

A new market is set to spring to life on June 28 at the site of the former Sunshine produce market on McIntyre Road.

The Sunshine Collective Market, to be held at the Westend Market Hotel, is the brainchild of Sahil Gulati.

Mr Gulati said he was excited to bring the “heritage of Sunshine back to life“.

“There used to be a market where the hotel is now. It was a produce market that used to run Thursday to Sunday, similar to the Queen Victoria Market,“ Mr Gulati said, noting the original market sheds are still intact to provide shelter for a new generation of stall holders and customers.

Mr Gulati said two Westend Market Hotel staff members remember the old produce market, and he has also booked an entertainer who worked as a clown at the old market to provide entertainment at the revived event.

“He has agreed to be the official entertainer on the day providing a magic show and balloon art. He was very excited when I was talking to him about the old market and what we are bringing back for the community,“ Mr Gulati said.

Thirty-five vendors have booked stalls offering handmade crafts, fresh food, plants, jewellery, skin care products, pet supplies and sauces and preserves among other items.

Mr Gulati has worked closely with Westend Market Hotel manager Paul Saminaden and his team. The hotel will offer a special menu on the day and serve food outside adding to the market atmosphere.

Mr Gulati said if the market is successful, he and fellow organisers will look at running it more frequently than once a month.

The first market, to be officially opened by Brimbank mayor Thuy Dang, will be held on Saturday June 28, 10am to 3pm.
