Man wanted over St Albans stabbing found dead

Victoria Police will prepare a report for the coroner after discovering the body of a St Albans man wanted in relation to the stabbing death of a woman on Thursday.

In a statement a police spokeswoman said the body of a 63-year-old St Albans man was found yesterday afternoon.

Police were not looking for anyone else in relation to the matter, the statement said.

A police spokeswoman would not divulge where the body was found.

Just after midnight on Thursday morning, emergency services were called to respond to reports of “a woman who had been stabbed” at a unit in Main Road East.

Paramedics treated the woman, 50, for life threatening injuries but she died en route to the hospital. Her identity has not yet been revealed.

Forensic detectives combed the property for evidence for hours yesterday while police door knocked neighbouring households to piece together what information they could.

About 8am police were seen carrying bags of evidence out of the unit, including a brown paper bag labelled “contents of cream and black handbag located o/s front door”.

Several properties were tapped off. A white pole near the unit’s front door was covered in blood.

As is common in St Albans, all units on the property had security screens covering the windows.

Neighbours told the media screams could be heard coming from the unit early on Thursday morning.

A neighbour, named Iris, said she heard a woman loudly screaming and crying at about 1am.

She said she did not know the people who lived in the block of units.

“After I hear ‘are you OK, are you OK?’ and then nothing else,” she said. “I feel very upset and nervous, it’s no good something like that happening next door.”

Another woman, who did not want to be named, said her husband heard screaming from their house, about 300 metres away. “It’s very scary, I won’t be coming past here any more,” she said.
