Lunar Festival returns

The St Albans Lunar Festival will return to Alfrieda Street this month with thousands of people expected to take part in one of Melbourne’s largest Lunar New Year celebrations.

Now in its 28th year, the festival will once again fill the street with colour, culture and community pride.

Locals can look forward to traditional lion and dragon dances, cultural performances, live music, food and market stalls, carnival rides and a fireworks finale to close the evening.

The event is delivered by the St Albans Business Association (SABGAI) in partnership with Brimbank council and the state government.

SABGAI president Sebastian Agricola said the festival plays a key role in promoting the local centre.

“We’re proud to deliver an event that brings more people into the town centre and shines a light on our local traders,” Mr Agricola said.

“The strong turnout shows how much the community values the festival and what St Albans has to offer.”

Committee member Benny Nguyen said the event blends fun, community, entertainment and tradition in a burst of colours.

He said he loves contributing to the festival.

“Every year I organise a marquee and a photo booth -– so obviously everyone can come and take their photos and create memories for free,” Mr Nguyen said.

The 2026 festival celebrates the year of the horse, a symbol of passion, energy and creativity.

The festival will run from 10am-10pm on Sunday 18 January on Alfrieda Street, St Albans.

“Come down and have a fun, colourful day and celebrate the Lunar New Year,” Mr Nguyen said.
