Cairnlea residents are calling for fewer lots and bigger block sizes as they continue their campaign for better outcomes at the former Albion Explosives site.
Residents and Brimbank council have expressed concerns over the planned development of the 41-hectare site on Ballarat Road, which has been set aside to create a new residential neighbourhood.
A group of residents have formed a committee to ensure the best possible outcome for the site.
Group spokesperson Graeme Blore said further investigation of the Development Victoria plans had made them aware of the block sizes.
Of the 840 blocks proposed, 30 per cent will be between 300 and 450 square metres, 30 per cent will be townhouses built on blocks between 100 and 250 square metres and 40 per cent will be micro lots, less than 100 square metres.
“They did a survey and the vast majority of respondents said they wanted three and four bedroom lots,” he said.
“Development Victoria has ignored what the community requested. The micro lots were never in the plans by VicUrban and it will change the aesthetic of Cairnlea.
“We want them to look at lot sizes and even reduce the number of lots and make the lots of greater land size to help address the concerns regarding things like heat build up.”
Mr Blore said family members of those who used to work on the site are among those calling for bigger blocks.
He said many wanted to stay in the area close to their families and this spot was the ideal location.
“They were expecting access to family size blocks so they can remain close to their elders.”
The community group is planning to increase its community information sessions and engagement in the coming weeks.
Last week, they had an online meeting with opposition planning and heritage, housing and suburban recovery spokesman Ryan Smith.
