Lost pets home sooner

Lost dogs and cats will soon be able to reunite with their owners sooner, with new legislation introduced in Victoria this week.

The change means that Victorians will soon be able to take a lost dog or cat to a participating vet clinic or registered animal shelter to be returned to their owners, instead of relying on councils.

The reforms proposed will aim to accomplish several things; allow shelters and participating vets to accept and reunite lost pets and owners with simple record keeping a reporting requirements; improve animal welfare by ensuring pet returns as soon as possible; reduce the burden on local councils; and improve operations for regulatory authorities.

The new arrangement will come into effect by October 1, 2022.
