Police are calling for pedestrians to be more cautious when crossing the road, following an increase in serious collision involving pedestrians in Brimbank.
Brimbank Highway Patrol sergeant John Sybenga said Brimbank police had noticed the increase over the past 12 months.
He urged people to to ‘Stop, Look, Listen and Think’ before crossing the road.
“Pedestrian safety is of concern for Victoria Police, who are encouraging all pedestrians to be more cautious when crossing the road,” Sergeant Sybenga said.
He said it’s important for children to learn about road safety from a young age.
“Not only parents, but all members of the community have the responsibility of being good road safety role models for children,” he said.
“Research shows that young children need to be closely supervised as they act on impulse, have difficulty in judging speed and distance and can be less visible to other road users.
“Educating young children on safe practices and providing plenty of supervised practice will assist them in developing lifelong safe habits when around the road network. Parents and carers can also find out what road safety education programs are being taught in their child’s school and reinforce the learnings when outside of the school environment.”
