Look after your belongings

Vehicle owners are being reminded to remove valuables from their cars following a number of thefts from vehicles in the Hillside, Caroline Springs and Fraser Rise areas in recent weeks.

Police have reported an increase in the number of thefts from vehicles in the area, and on many occasions, the vehicles have been left unlocked and valuables left inside.

Melton Police said on the Melton Eyewatch Facebook page they would be increasing patrols throughout the community to help try and curb the thefts.

The post said vehicle owners can take steps to try and prevent thefts.

“It is really important to always secure your vehicle and that is regardless of how long you will be away from it,” the Facebook post said.

“If your vehicle is in the garage, parked in your driveway or you simply need to run back into your home please remove the keys and lock it at all times.”

In 2020, theft from a motor vehicle was the second most popular criminal offence in Melton, with 1002 offences.

It was the most popular criminal offence in Brimbank, with 2004 offences of theft from a motor vehicle reported.

Victoria Police have created a residential crime prevention information kit to help residents keep their belongings safe.
