Locals join National Pyjama Day to raise money for children

Kellie Bennetts will wear fuzzy bed socks, don her comfiest pyjamas and enjoy a sleepover with friends when she raises money for foster children later this month.

The Keilor East woman will be fundraising for the Pyjama Foundation, where she’s a ‘Pyjama Angel’, visiting and mentoring foster children.

Ms Bennetts visits a Melton foster family once a week, playing educational games and doing “girly things”.

“As soon as I get there, the children run up to me and they’re so happy to see me,” she says.

“Socially, they’re far more advanced from when I first met them. They enjoy having a friend come and see them to play games and do fun things.”

She started volunteering about three months ago and says she “absolutely loves” the family she works with.

“It’s so fulfilling to walk into a home and just, basically, be mobbed by a group of kids who are so happy you’re there,” Ms Bennetts says.

“I’ve always been interested in helping people, and working with underprivileged kids is something that’s quite dear to me.”

She will join thousands of people around Australia when she hosts a Pyjama Day fundraiser to help pay for educational resources and raise awareness about children in foster care.
