Brimbank State Emergency Service (SES) Unit Controller Bernie Thatcher has spent almost 15 years serving her community in times of crisis. Now, there is an opportunity for locals to show their gratitude for Bernie’s contributions.

Bernie has been shortlisted a finalist for the 2023 Westfield Local Heroes which recognises everyday role models who make a positive impact on their local community.

Bernie is a local resident and oversees a Brimbank team of 35 and volunteers more than 1000 hours a year with the SES.

Bernie said she first joined the SES as a way to volunteer and give back to her own community.

“I started with the Brimbank unit 14 and a half years ago and I’ve stayed there ever since,” she said.

“My team is awesome. Every member is special in their own way and we’re like a family, we call ourselves the orange family.”

Voting is now open for the community to vote for their local heroes, and the finalist with the most votes will receive a $20,000 grant for the organisation they represent. The remaining finalists will receive a $5000 grant.

“I’m chuffed by the nomination, it’s amazing. If it wasn’t for the unit and my members I probably wouldn’t be in this position now. To me this isn’t just about me, it’s all of the Brimbank SES who have achieved this.”

Bernie said if she is successful in the community vote, VICSES Brimbank Unit will put its funds towards a new garage to keep its vehicles undercover.

Voting closes September 11 and the successful hero will be announced on October 10.
