Life’s journeys inspire Malaika Gilani

Everyone has a story to tell … but most go unheard.

Malaika Gilani wants to highlight the many untold stories that can inspire people on their own journeys through life.

When the 16-year-old Caroline Springs teen (pictured) was assigned a peer counselling role four years ago, she at first felt burdened … not by the struggles her classmates were facing, but by the sheer fact she couldn’t help.

“So I started writing poetry,” Malaika says. “I used poetry to express my feelings.

“And I now want people reading the poems to know that someone else is going through exactly what you are … you’re not alone.”

The aspiring medic has published her first book, Untold Journeys – a collection spanning four years – which will be launched this weekend.

Malaika says while she’s lucky to have a supportive family network, not everyone is in such a fortunate position.

Untold Journeys will be launched at 1pm on Sunday, February 26, at Gilson College, 450 Taylors Road, Taylors Hill. To RSVP, email malaika.fatima@gmail.com.
