Lest we forget

St Albans John Kruger wrote this Anzac Day poem to share with Star Weekly readers:

Up with the sparrows,

Down to the ‘March,

Sheltering from the rain,

Underneath a huge larch.

Applauding the ghosts,

And returned Heroes, too,

As they proudly parade past,

‘Neath their Red, White, and Blue.

At the end, there were yarns,

And quite a few beers,

With many fond remembrances,

Accompanying bitter-sweet tears.

I ‘stayed the course’

‘Til my tummy felt ‘dicky’,

(I still maintain …

It was a ‘crook’ ANZAC bikkie.)

Wars are useless,

Producing nothing but regret.

Please, no more –

– Lest we forget!
