A $3 million state government Better Pools grant could kickstart an upgrade of the St Albans Leisure Centre.
Brimbank council has started talks with key stakeholders on funding the centre and a project timeline has been released. At last week’s meeting, the council endorsed plans to apply for the grant while continuing to push for other external funding.
The council is hoping for $25 million in funding from both state and federal governments for the project.
Mayor Margaret Giudice said she had received positive feedback from state politicians.
“Recently, I invited local MPs for an informal tour of the leisure centre as an opportunity to show them around the current facility,” she said.
“It was wonderful to see the support that they offered for the regional facility and the benefit to the community, and we look forward to continuing the conversation about both state and federal government investment in the project.
“We all know the St Albans Leisure Centre is old and tired, but still much-loved and used. It needs to be replaced. We want to use this opportunity to improve the health and wellbeing of our community.”
Council expects to have the centre’s component brief completed by August, with the design and tender process to run from August to October, 2018.
