Lana brings her acclaimed story home

In 2014, comedian Lana Schwarcz was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Facing her own mortality, she dealt with it the only way she knew how – she wrote some jokes.

Three years later those jokes have morphed into an award-winning show, Lovely Lady Lump, which Schwarcz says provides a different point of view to a topic traditionally treated with the utmost seriousness.

“Comedians draw off their own experiences. When you have an experience that takes up so much of your time and a lot of headspace, you end up writing about it,” Schwarcz said.

“I’ve had people turn around and tell me that you can’t laugh at cancer. They’re wrong. The majority of fellow survivors I’ve met are great at laughing at it.

“We need to laugh at it, to make fun of it. We’re here for a short time so we may as well have a good time.”

While Schwarcz admits to experiencing some tough times, she says writing from day one and seeing the lighter side of things, played a significant part in her recovery.

“The show is celebratory, uplifting and joyous. I don’t let the audience leave feeling down.”

Schwarcz is bringing her show to St Albans for a one-off performance at the Bowery Theatre on Saturday, October 21.

As a native of the west, she says it’s exciting to bring the show home.
