Lakeview Senior College students and staff will sacrifice an hour’s pay to help some of the many disadvantaged communities around the world.

The school has teamed with local not-for-profit Hopes and Dreams, which works in India, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The money raised will go towards water and sanitation projects and micro-business programs in these countries.

Year 11 team leader Michael Pisani said students raised more than $2600 last year, which gave more than 20 Indian women the start-up capital for their own small businesses.

A Hopes and Dreams report found the economic flow-on “impacted” more than 170 people, based on an average five dependants per woman.

Mr Pisani said the cause helped students understand global health better – a core part of their studies.

“They have an understanding of … the impact poverty is having on health, access to income and water,” Mr Pisani said.

The Lakeview One Challenge will run from Monday, August 29, until September, 2.
