Labor’s Sarah Connolly expected to win in Laverton

Labor’s Sarah Connelly will be the first MP for the new electorate Laverton after she defeated nine candidates in the state election.

With just over half the votes counted, Ms Connolly has secured 10,556 first preference votes (46.50 per cent), Liberal candidate Raja Reddy received 9481 first preference votes (22.42 per cent), Greens candidate Braishna Durzada obtained 2249 first preference votes (9.91 per cent) and Victorian Socialists candidate Catherine Robertson received 1540 first preference votes (6.78 per cent).

On a two party preferred basis, Ms Connolly secured 68.5 per cent of the vote, a total of 14,148 while Mr Reddy amassed 6484 votes, or 31.43 per cent of the vote.

Ms Connolly had been the Tarneit MP, was shifted to Laverton when the new seat was created.

The Brimbank suburbs included in the electorate are: Sunshine, Sunshine West, Braybrook, Brooklyn, Albion, Ardeer, and part of Derrimut.

“Thank you Laverton, for the honour and privilege of making me your representative and your voice in the Victorian State Parliament as your new Member for Laverton,” Ms Connolly wrote on Facebook.

“To everyone who voted for me, and those that did not, I won’t let you down.”
