An up-and-coming Keilor Park hip hop artist has turned online hate into art.
Nina Lee Kisses released her first song, 100s in LA, on major music streaming platforms Apple Music and Spotify last year.
The song attracted tens of thousands of views and comments, but Nina said the feedback slowly began to take a dark turn.
“When the song dropped, I started getting a lot of comments. They started off being pretty positive, but they quickly turned to hate,” she said.
“I got a whole heap of hate, comments about my appearance, my weight, my skin colour. Lots of things. At first it got to me a little but after a while it just inspired me.”
Instead of letting the hate get her down, Nina decided to use it in a positive way.
“I decided to take these comments and put them in a song, so I began writing and came up with Be Quiet.”
“It’s for the haters to show they won’t silence me. This is what I want to do and I’m going to keep going.”
While a portion of the comments might be negative, Nina has already attracted the attention of some overseas producers.
“I’ve been in contact with some people in America and there’s actually a group over there helping develop a beat for my next track,” she said.
“I’ve had a lot of positive feedback from America, which has been really encouraging.
“I’m not going to let hateful comments stop me from doing something I love.”
