The new sportsground lighting on Keilor Park Reserve ovals 2 and 4 is expected to significantly increase participation across multiple sports including football, soccer and cricket.
The new lights will also allow the ground to be used to its full potential at night for sports or community use.
The 100 lux lights are both LED and environmentally friendly, and meet the Australian competition standards for soccer and Australian rules.
Before the project, just one of the five ovals on site had lights. Having three lit ovals now available at the site, helps meet the football and soccer clubs’ need for more lights onsite to cater for demand.
Keilor Park Reserve is home to a variety of clubs including football, cricket, tennis, softball, athletics, soccer and the Keilor Basketball and Netball Stadium. The facilities include five ovals, three soccer pitches, two synthetic fields, four softball diamonds, four tennis courts, six basketball courts and an athletics track.
The total cost of the project was $954,148, with council contributing $704,148 to the project as well as $250,000 from the state government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund 2021.
Brimbank mayor Bruce Lancashire said the funding will provide a wide benefit to club members, players and the broader community.
“Lighting up Keilor Park Reserve Ovals 2 and 4 means more people can play sport here. It provides flexibility for the football and soccer clubs to cater for future growth to accommodate their training and competition needs,” he said.
“The new lighting also provides the community with additional options to use and enjoy the space.”
The Local Sports Infrastructure Fund provides a range of grant opportunities across five funding streams, with a dedicated stream for community sports lighting.
As part of the grant, Brimbank council also received funding to upgrade the lighting at the Deer Park Bocce Club indoor courts.
