Keilor Downs man dies in custody

A Keilor Downs man has died after being found unresponsive in the rear of a divisional van at the Victoria Police Centre on Friday.

The 30-year-old came to police attention after threatening self-harm at a hospital in Fitzroy about noon.

After being released from hospital the man was taken into custody in relation to a number of outstanding warrants.

He was later found unresponsive in the rear of a divisional van at the Victoria Police Centre on Spencer Street. The man was taken to hospital but died on Monday.

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating.

Officers from Professional Standard Command, as standard practice, will have oversight of the investigation as the incident occurred while the man was in police custody.
