Three men, one armed with a meat cleaver, broke into a Keilor bakery overnight and attempted to steal a safe.

Police say the offenders smashed their way into the Baker’s Delight store in Keilor Village about 1.30am while a staff member was working.

The baker fled the shop and was unharmed in the incident.

The offenders tried to steal the bakery’s safe but were unsuccessful. They then turned their attention to cash drawers and made off with several empty drawers.

The bakery’s entrance has been extensively damaged and the shop will be closed today while the police investigation is under way.

Baker’s Delight spokesman Gerry Gerard said the baker who was working at the time of the break-in was the company’s main priority.

“We are doing everything we can to support the baker with counselling and working with the authorities to further understand how this occurred.”

He said the company’s workplace health and safety team was working with police.

“Further investigations are currently underway to fully understand what has occurred and to determine if additional safeguards are required,” he said.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
