Keeping local road workers safe this summer

As summer progresses, road users will notice several traffic controllers at the Robinsons Road level crossing removal site in Deer Park keeping roads and construction sites safe while works are underway.

Traffic controller Jess, who has been in the role for two years, explains the importance of staying safe when driving through construction zones.

She understands the frustrations drivers can experience when navigating construction sites, but has a clear message for motorists.

“I know we all have somewhere to go, but safety needs to come first. And we’re thankful for the community for working with us while we get these important projects done, keeping locals and construction workers safe,” she said.

Jess said busy roads are a high-risk work environment, especially when drivers do not slow down or obey construction zone speed limits.

“The most important thing road users can do to help us do our job properly is to slow down, and obey the signs and our directions. It’s really important that people are aware they’re coming into a road works area and the need to slow down.”

Level Crossing Removal Project’s program director, Andrew Pepplinkhouse believes focusing on arriving safely – not quickly – should be every driver’s priority, even when having to encounter temporary road works around level crossing sites.

“As we continue to remove level crossings in the local area, Melbourne’s west is set to benefit from reduced congestion and safer roads for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” he said.

“While we progress with works, we ask the community to remain patient and plan ahead to ensure you get where you need to on time.

“While we get on with the job of removing these dangerous and congested level crossings, there will be times when we need to close local roads so our crews can work safely. We’ll always let the community know in advance so they can plan ahead and allow extra time.”

Here’s some rules to remember so everyone gets home safe:

-Observe reduced speed limits that are in place to protect yourself and road workers as you travel through a work site.

-Be patient when making your way through changed traffic conditions

-Respect work zones and take note of bollards and barriers

-Follow traffic and directional signage.
