Kealba Landfill suspension extension

Kealba Landfill hotspots continue to burn as the Barro Groups operating licence suspension has been extended.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has extended the suspension of Barro Group’s operating licence at the Kealba landfill until Saturday, September 30.

An information session regarding the site was held on Wednesday, July 13, in response to the extension.

The Barro Group is not able to accept waste at the landfill until it has been cleared by an independent environmental auditor, it is unclear at this stage if it intends to continue operation.

A spokesperson for the EPA said: “As work continues on cleaning up the final hotspot at the Kealba Landfill, EPA continues to hold community meetings with local residents affected by the ongoing work.

“We thank those residents who continue to attend the community sessions, they are very useful for both sharing and learning from the community about the local issues, particularly describing and understanding different odour types.”

Hotspot fires continue to burn across the facility and the final deadline for them to be extinguished remains as Monday, August 22.

Residents are encouraged to make any complaints or inquiries directly to the EPA.
