Brimbank council’s calls for the Victorian government to help develop greater support and pathways to assist local jobseekers have been answered.
Mayor Georgina Papafotiou welcomed the final report by the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry for Disadvantaged Job Seekers, which has considered and responded to a Brimbank council submission.
“I commend the Chair of the Committee, Hon John Eren MP, and committee members for their work and diligence around these important issues, for which Brimbank is deeply passionate in advocating,” Cr Papafotiou said.
“Council is focussed on the needs of local disadvantaged jobseekers and is pushing for the establishment of a business, jobs and skills working group to guide construction of the $10 billion Melbourne Airport Rail Link and Sunshine Super Hub, and to create a legacy of jobs for the future Sunshine Priority Precinct.”
Key recommendations include better connection of school leavers with TAFE, higher education, industry and job pathways; state government support for more neighbourhood houses to offer pre-accredited training and employment skills, digital literacy and work readiness; and the Department of Education and Training working with the TAFE and learn local sectors to foster greater collaboration and pathways for disadvantaged jobseekers.
Other recommendations include: the Department of Education and Training working with English language program providers to develop models tailored for the needs of newly arrived migrants, and the state government encouraging councils to develop and implement social procurement policies and frameworks.
